The weeks leading up to a recital are vital in keeping students motivated and excited for the recital. Here are some tips for parents over the next few weeks!!
TEAM EFFORT
While the instructor plays a large part in recital preparation, when parents stay involved this can make a huge difference in a student’s attitude. Team up with the instructor to make this recital a fun and memorable event for students!
INVITE FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Feeling support and encouragement from a multitude of people is essential to the success of students. Having guests bring flowers, cards, and gifts for the students as a reward for their performance and hard work will be very encouraging to students.
GET EXCITED
Pump them up! Brag about how proud you are of them and how much everyone is going to enjoy watching them. Tell them how brave they are for performing on stage and how proud you are. Make this event a BIG DEAL. Successful performances provide motivation to keep taking lessons and practicing.
MAKE IT SPECIAL
Do something special like choose a new outfit, have a sleepover, treat them to their favorite ice cream, or similar rewards. Show students the performance is meaningful, important, and valued. It doesn’t have to be anything grand; often a heartfelt note left on the piano is all it takes for students to feel special.
PRACTICE AUDIENCES
Be the “pretend audience” at home for your child. Sit down regularly and enjoy some practice performances. Set up opportunities for others to hear students play (invite grandparents over, have them play for a neighbor, send a video to a relative, etc.) Not only does this provide great performance practice, but it also shows how much you value your child’s hard work.
OFFER ENCOURAGEMENT
Encourage consistent practice throughout the week. Regular practice is the most effective way of ensuring a successful recital performance. Offer lots of encouragement during practices. Let students know how excited you are to watch them share their talents!
CONFLICTS
If you have a conflict with the recital date, please let the instructor know ASAP so that an alternative performance can be arranged for the student. All students deserve to showcase their talents and feel special for their hard work!!
CONQUER ANXIETY & FEARS
Parents should encourage their children to participate in music recitals, even when they are nervous or hesitant. It is normal for young students to feel nervous or anxious. However, opting out reinforces the false belief that they cannot overcome their fear. Over time, this false belief can make future performances even more challenging. Piano recitals provide a supportive environment where students can practice managing nervousness. These events offer an opportunity to learn that nerves are a normal part of life and that overcoming them is both possible and rewarding. One of the key benefits of music lessons is helping children develop the confidence to perform in front of an audience. By facing these challenges at a young age, students build resilience that carries into adulthood, empowering them to tackle difficult tasks and believe in their ability to succeed.
