Many adults have always wanted to learn an instrument or take music lessons, but convince themselves they are “too old” and that its “too late” to learn. But no matter your age, it’s never too late to learn a new skill. Starting early is not the only path to mastering an instrument. A true interest in music, dedication, discipline, passion, perseverance, and patience will provide you with great success. Learning to play an instrument is a rewarding experience for life and learning as an adult has many advantages.
Some advantages include:
Young adults often have more time to dedicate to practice
Middle aged adult students are less likely to experience financial obstacles
Senior adult students are typically retired from employment obligations
Adults understand the commitment that learning a musical instrument involves
Adult beginners typically make quicker progress than young students; learning an instrument is like learning a technical skill which is more suited for adults than children
Adults have more extensive musical histories with transferable skills and previous knowledge
Adults understand their own learning styles and can communicate their needs with the instructor
Adults have a greater desire to learn and tend to be more motivated
Adults understand the benefits of music education more intensely than children
Adults pay for their own lessons which motivates them to get the full value out of lessons
Adults willingly practice unlike some children who refuse
Adults have experience with learning new skills and understand the typical progression of learning through beginning, intermediate, and advanced phases
Adults have a more equal, peer-like relationship which leads to a more personalized lesson experience
Adults are fully grown and are not held back physically like children with changing and developing bodies
However, each phase of adult life may provide unique challenges that are also useful to consider. Here are some obstacles adult beginners might face:
Younger adults may struggle with the ability to pay for lessons consistently
Middle aged students often struggle making time between busy work and family schedules
Seniors may lack the energy or mental clarity to focus and practice
Adults have a bigger fear of inadequacy and are more afraid of making mistakes
Adults sometimes have unreasonable expectations or goals and feel like they have failed rather than progressed
So, while there are some obstacles, the advantages of taking music lessons as an adult clearly outweigh any challenges you might encounter. Rather than worry about your age, realistically prepare yourself for music lessons. Be patient and tackle any challenges with a positive attitude, so that you can immerse yourself in learning, creating, and enjoying music!!
